CBD Reduced Melanoma Growth in Mice, but Human Treatment Remains Unproven

A small 2019 study in mice found that cannabidiol (CBD) slowed melanoma growth and extended survival compared with no treatment. The results suggest a possible avenue for further research—but they do not show that CBD treats melanoma in people.

The study, published in the Journal of Surgical Research, was conducted by researchers at Augusta University. It examined whether CBD could affect melanoma tumors in a mouse model and whether the treatment appeared to influence the animals’ well-being.

What the study found

Researchers implanted B16F10 melanoma cells under the skin of 18 mice and divided the animals into three groups of six. One group received a control solution, another received CBD at 5 milligrams per kilogram twice a week, and the third received the chemotherapy drug cisplatin at 5 milligrams per kilogram once a week.

Compared with the control group, CBD significantly reduced tumor size and increased survival time. The mice receiving the control treatment survived an average of about 15 days, while those treated with CBD survived about 19 days. The cisplatin group had the longest average survival, at approximately 24 days, and showed the greatest reduction in tumor growth.

The researchers also reported that the CBD-treated mice appeared to maintain more normal movement and behavior than the animals receiving cisplatin. However, these observations were based on behavior in the animal model rather than on a validated quality-of-life measure used in human clinical research.

An early animal study—not a cancer treatment

The findings are preliminary. This was a pilot experiment involving only 18 mice, and it used a specific melanoma cell line rather than tumors from human patients. The animals were euthanized when their tumors reached 12 millimeters, so the study could not establish long-term outcomes or determine whether CBD could prevent recurrence or metastasis.

Just as importantly, the experiment did not test CBD combined with cisplatin or with the immunotherapy and targeted therapies commonly used in modern melanoma care. The study’s authors described CBD as a possible adjunct worth investigating, not as a replacement for established treatment.

Melanoma treatment depends on the stage and characteristics of the disease. Options may include surgery, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, or—in selected circumstances—chemotherapy. What is known about CBD and cancer?

Laboratory and animal studies have reported anticancer effects from cannabinoids in several cancer models, but results from preclinical research do not necessarily translate into safe or effective treatments for people. According to the National Cancer Institute, cannabis and cannabinoids have not been established as cancer treatments in clinical practice.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a purified CBD product for certain seizure disorders, but it has not approved CBD as a treatment for cancer. CBD products may also interact with prescription medicines, and the strength and purity of commercially available products can vary. The Augusta University study therefore provides a reason to pursue more research, not evidence that patients should use CBD to treat melanoma. Well-designed studies in people would be needed to determine whether CBD has anticancer activity, whether it is safe alongside melanoma therapies, and whether any potential benefits outweigh the risks.
