Cannabis and Exercise: What the Evidence Shows About Performance, Recovery, and Safety

Cannabis is sometimes promoted as a way to make workouts more enjoyable, reduce soreness, or speed recovery. But the scientific evidence does not support treating cannabis as a proven performance enhancer. The effects also vary substantially depending on the product, dose, cannabinoid content, route of administration, and the individual using it.

A 2023 survey study of trained individuals found that some regular exercisers used cannabis—particularly THC or CBD products—to manage perceived pain, inflammation, stress, sleep problems, and post-workout soreness. These findings describe people’s experiences and beliefs; they do not establish that cannabis caused faster recovery or improved athletic performance.

Performance benefits remain unproven

Research has not shown that THC reliably improves strength, endurance, aerobic capacity, or other core measures of exercise performance. A systematic review of chronic cannabis use and exercise performance found no significant differences in key measures such as maximal oxygen uptake or physical work capacity. An earlier review reached a similar conclusion, reporting that THC did not enhance aerobic exercise or strength.

Cannabis may change how exercise feels without making the body perform better. In a controlled crossover study of 42 regular cannabis users, participants reported greater enjoyment and more positive feelings during exercise after using cannabis. They also reported greater exertion, however, and their pain ratings were not significantly different from the non-cannabis exercise session. The study examined subjective responses in a relatively small sample, not improvements in athletic output or long-term fitness.

There is also no good evidence that cannabis increases energy through improved circulation. THC can raise heart rate and blood pressure shortly after use, but that cardiovascular response should not be confused with improved conditioning or a safer ability to exercise.

Recovery, soreness, and sleep

Pain relief and better sleep could theoretically help someone adhere to a training program, but the evidence for cannabis-assisted recovery is still limited. Survey participants commonly reported using cannabis after exercise for soreness, relaxation, and sleep, yet self-reported benefit cannot distinguish a true physiological effect from changes in mood or perception.

CBD has been studied separately from THC, but the results are mixed. In a small randomized, double-blind crossover study involving 17 trained participants, short-term CBD use did not produce clear improvements in performance or inflammatory markers after an intensive training protocol. A 2024 systematic review similarly concluded that evidence for CBD’s effects on exercise capacity and post-exercise recovery remains limited and that further research is needed.

For resistance training, cannabis should not be viewed as a muscle-building supplement. Muscle growth depends primarily on progressive training, adequate nutrition, sufficient sleep, and recovery between sessions. Cannabis may alter appetite or reduce the perception of discomfort, but there is no established evidence that it directly increases muscle protein synthesis or produces greater gains in strength or size.

Running and other endurance activities

Some runners say cannabis makes exercise feel more relaxing, immersive, or enjoyable. That may help certain people remain engaged with a routine, but enjoyment is different from improved running performance. THC can impair attention, judgment, coordination, and reaction time—abilities that matter when running near traffic, cycling, swimming, climbing, or using gym equipment.

Smoking cannabis also exposes the lungs and cardiovascular system to irritants. Edibles avoid smoke but have delayed and less predictable effects, which can make accidental overconsumption more likely. Neither form has been established as a reliable way to improve endurance or recovery.

Use caution around exercise

Using THC before exercise can be particularly risky during high-intensity or technically demanding activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that cannabis can affect decision-making, coordination, reaction time, and heart rate. Avoid exercising while intoxicated if the activity involves heavy weights, roads, open water, heights, machinery, or other meaningful injury risks.

Do not combine cannabis with alcohol or other intoxicating substances. People with cardiovascular conditions, a history of panic or psychosis, or those taking prescription medications should discuss cannabis use with a healthcare professional. Competitive athletes should also check the rules that apply to their sport: THC remains prohibited in competition under the 2026 World Anti-Doping Agency list.

Overall, cannabis may change the subjective experience of exercise and may help some users manage symptoms such as pain or insomnia. However, current research does not show that it reliably increases strength, endurance, energy, muscle growth, or recovery speed. For most people, the safer approach is to build fitness around consistent training, sleep, nutrition, and evidence-based medical care—not to rely on cannabis as an athletic enhancer.
