Cannabis Education in North America: From Chemistry Degrees to Clinical and Commercial Training

As cannabis legalization has expanded, colleges and universities in the United States and Canada have built programs covering far more than cultivation. Students can now study cannabis chemistry, plant biology, medicine, law, policy, business, retail operations, and laboratory testing.

These offerings are not all the same. Some are accredited undergraduate degrees, while others are professional certificates, continuing-education courses, research initiatives, or short industry-training programs. Availability also changes frequently, so prospective students should confirm current admissions and course schedules directly with each institution.

Science and laboratory training

Michigan has been an important center for cannabis-focused science education. Northern Michigan University’s Medicinal Plant Chemistry degree combines chemistry, biology, botany, laboratory analysis, research, and entrepreneurship. Although the degree is not limited to cannabis, the university identifies cannabis, herbal extracts, and other natural products as important career applications.

Lake Superior State University’s Cannabis Chemistry program takes a more specialized approach. Its bachelor’s degree emphasizes analytical chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, sample preparation, extraction, separations, and the testing of cannabinoids and contaminants. The university says students receive more than 600 hours of laboratory experience and can pursue careers in testing, regulatory compliance, public health, and related fields.

These programs illustrate an important distinction: a cannabis-related degree still relies heavily on conventional scientific training. Students learn chemistry, biology, statistics, instrumentation, quality assurance, and research methods rather than simply studying the plant in isolation.

Medicine, pharmacology, and public health

The University of Vermont has developed one of the more visible academic and professional-education efforts in this area. Its Medical Cannabis Center for Research and Education supports research and education involving cannabis, cannabinoid pharmacology, plant biology, medical applications, and public health. UVM materials describe both college-credit coursework and professional certificates designed for clinicians and other professionals who need an evidence-based understanding of cannabis.

Coursework in this category typically addresses the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoid chemistry, pharmacology, potential therapeutic uses, adverse effects, dosing questions, drug interactions, and the limitations of existing clinical evidence. Such programs are intended to improve professional knowledge—not to replace medical training or establish that cannabis is an appropriate treatment for every condition.

Other universities have offered individual courses for health professionals. The University of Washington, for example, developed online training on medicinal cannabis and chronic pain for providers. Programs of this kind generally focus on clinical decision-making, patient counseling, and state-specific rules rather than on cultivation or laboratory chemistry.

Research centers are different from degree programs

Some institutions highlighted in earlier cannabis-education roundups are better understood as research centers than as schools offering a stand-alone cannabis major. UCLA established its cannabis initiative in 2017, and the work now operates through the UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids. The center brings together researchers in medicine, public health, law, policy, and the social sciences to study cannabis’s effects on the body, brain, and society.

UC Davis likewise contributes to cannabis education through courses and broader plant, pharmacology, toxicology, and agricultural research. Its catalog includes Cannabis & Cannabinoids in Physiology & Medicine, a medical-student course examining current knowledge about cannabis, cannabinoids, human physiology, and potential medical uses.

These initiatives give students opportunities to encounter cannabis research within established academic disciplines. They should not be confused with professional credentials that qualify someone to practice medicine, conduct regulated laboratory testing, or operate a licensed cannabis business.

Business, law, and interdisciplinary study

Cannabis education also extends beyond the laboratory. The University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law has offered courses addressing marijuana law, regulatory drafting, and policy. Stockton University’s Cannabis Studies minor, established in 2018, takes an interdisciplinary approach that includes medical cannabis, law, business, social issues, plant science, and the changing regulatory environment. Stockton has also developed the Cannabis & Hemp Research Initiative to support education, internships, cultivation research, and industry partnerships.

Shorter programs have been offered by continuing-education providers and private training organizations. These may cover dispensary operations, retail compliance, cannabis journalism, extraction, marketing, finance, or the chemistry of concentrates. Their quality and academic status can vary considerably, so students should check whether a course carries college credit, is accredited, includes laboratory or supervised experience, and is taught by appropriately qualified instructors.

Commercial cultivation and production in Canada

Canada’s legalization of non-medical cannabis created demand for workers trained in controlled-environment agriculture, quality systems, production planning, and regulatory compliance. Niagara College’s Commercial Cannabis Production program covers plant nutrition, lighting, climate control, pest and disease management, cultivar selection, production records, packaging requirements, and workplace experience with licensed producers.

Other Canadian institutions have offered courses in facility management, retail, cultivation, quality assurance, and cannabis business operations. Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia developed a Cannabis Career Training series that included production, quality assurance, and retail-related instruction. Mount Royal University in Alberta also offered online continuing-education courses through a partnership connected to KPU, covering areas such as plant production, facility management, marketing, and business planning.

McGill University created a 30-credit Diploma in Commercial Cannabis covering cannabis production, genetics and breeding, plant disease, contaminants, product design, and an industry internship. Its academic materials have also noted that program availability may vary by academic year. McGill’s separate Research Centre for Cannabis continues to frame the field broadly, linking plant science and agricultural production with medicine, harm reduction, law, education, and public policy.

What students should look for

The strongest programs connect cannabis-specific material to established academic standards. Depending on a student’s goal, useful features may include analytical laboratory training, supervised cultivation, plant pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, quality assurance, regulatory instruction, internships, and research experience.

Because cannabis regulations and course offerings continue to change, applicants should verify a program’s current status, accreditation, admission requirements, laboratory access, internship arrangements, and employment claims before enrolling. Cannabis-focused education can provide a foundation for work in testing laboratories, agriculture, manufacturing, health care, policy, or business—but the most durable preparation usually comes from combining cannabis knowledge with a recognized discipline such as chemistry, biology, horticulture, pharmacology, law, or public health.
