How Long Cannabis Can Be Detected, and Why That Does Not Equal Impairment
There is no single timetable for how long cannabis remains detectable in the body. The answer depends on the product, dose, route of administration, frequency of use, the type of test and the laboratory’s cutoff level. A positive test also does not necessarily mean that a person is still intoxicated or unable to perform a task safely.
A 2026 systematic review of urinary THC and metabolite studies found that weekly and daily users could remain above common workplace-testing thresholds for weeks after stopping cannabis. The review also found that even relatively low doses, particularly when taken orally, could sometimes produce a positive urine result. These findings illustrate why detection windows cannot be reduced to a single number.
Detection is different from impairment
THC, the principal intoxicating compound in cannabis, can affect reaction time, coordination, attention, judgment and perception. The effects may last longer after an edible than after inhaled cannabis because edible products take longer to reach peak effects and may produce more prolonged impairment.
Feeling normal the next morning is not a reliable test of driving fitness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidance on cannabis and driving notes that cannabis can impair skills needed for safe driving, while the relationship between a person’s THC concentration and actual driving impairment is difficult to determine. The safest choice is not to drive after using cannabis or any other impairing substance. Combining cannabis with alcohol can increase impairment.
Conversely, a person may test positive after the intoxicating effects have ended. THC and its metabolites can persist in the body, particularly with repeated use. A workplace test generally identifies recent or past exposure—not whether someone is impaired at the moment of testing.
What affects the detection window?
Important factors include:
- Frequency of use: Occasional use generally produces a shorter detection period than weekly, daily or heavy use.
- Dose and potency: Higher doses and products with more THC may increase the amount and duration of detectable metabolites.
- Route of administration: Smoking, vaping and eating cannabis produce different absorption and elimination patterns.
- Individual biology: Body composition, metabolism, liver function, genetics and hydration can influence test results. However, body mass index alone cannot reliably predict when a test will become negative.
- Test sensitivity and cutoff: Different laboratories and testing programs use different thresholds, so two tests taken at different times may not produce the same result.
THC is fat-soluble and is distributed into fatty tissues. The body gradually metabolizes it, primarily in the liver, into compounds such as THC-COOH, which are eventually eliminated. Exercise, excessive water consumption, supplements and “detox” products have not been shown to provide a dependable way to eliminate THC quickly.
How long can different tests detect cannabis?
These are broad patterns, not guarantees:
- Blood: Blood testing is more useful for assessing very recent exposure than for identifying past use. THC concentrations can fall quickly after inhalation, although metabolites may remain longer, especially in frequent users.
- Oral fluid: Saliva, more accurately called oral-fluid testing, generally has a shorter detection window than urine and is designed primarily to identify relatively recent use. Detection varies with dose, route and the test used.
- Urine: Urine tests usually look for the inactive metabolite THC-COOH rather than current impairment. A single use may be detectable for several days, while repeated use can produce positive results for weeks or longer.
- Hair: Hair testing can provide a retrospective window of roughly 90 days when the standard scalp-hair segment is analyzed. It is not a precise record of the date or amount of use, and cannabis hair testing has recognized limitations involving low concentrations and external contamination. Because the tests measure different compounds in different specimens, a positive result cannot reliably establish the exact time of use. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health cautions that THC detected in urine or blood does not by itself establish the frequency of use, the time of last use or current impairment.
Medical cannabis and employment testing
Medical authorization does not automatically exempt a worker from a drug-testing policy. Requirements vary by employer, state, occupation and federal program. Safety-sensitive jobs—including some transportation, law-enforcement, construction, health-care and public-safety positions—may be subject to stricter rules.
Federal workplace programs test for marijuana metabolites, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s workplace-testing resources explain that positive results may lead to employee-assistance referrals, treatment requirements or disciplinary action, depending on the agency and circumstances. Department of Transportation rules also apply to designated transportation workers and should be checked separately.
HIPAA is not a blanket protection against employment consequences. The law limits how covered health-care providers and health plans disclose protected health information, but employment records and employer-run drug-testing programs are generally treated differently. The Department of Health and Human Services explains that the HIPAA Privacy Rule usually does not apply to an employer’s employment records.
For anyone using medical cannabis, the practical questions are not simply “How long does marijuana stay in my system?” They are: What type of product was used, when was it used, what test will be administered, what cutoff applies, and what do the relevant driving and workplace rules require? A positive test cannot determine impairment on its own, but driving while impaired remains unsafe and may carry legal consequences regardless of whether cannabis was used for medical reasons.
