Among Frequent Cannabis Users, Getting High Wasn’t Linked to Lower Motivation, but It Did Reduce Self-Control
A study of frequent cannabis users found little evidence that getting high makes people less motivated or more paranoid. The research also found no measurable “weed hangover” in the hours or day after use—but it did identify small, short-term declines in self-control, orderliness and related aspects of conscientiousness.
Published in 2024 in Social Psychological and Personality Science, the study examined how cannabis affected people in their everyday lives rather than relying solely on laboratory tests or long-term comparisons between users and non-users.
Researchers followed 260 adults in the United States and Canada who used cannabis recreationally at least three times a week. Participants were recruited through Reddit, completed a baseline questionnaire and received brief surveys five times a day for seven days. In total, the researchers analyzed 3,701 experience-sampling reports.
When participants were high, they generally reported more positive emotions, including happiness, awe, inspiration and gratitude. They also reported feeling less fearful and stressed. Contrary to common depictions of cannabis intoxication, the researchers found no increase in momentary suspicion or paranoia among the participants.
The findings on motivation were similarly limited. Being high was not associated with greater apathy or lower intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. Participants were also no less willing to take on a mentally demanding task in exchange for a larger reward. The one exception was a very small reduction in motivation driven by a desire to avoid feeling guilty or disappointed in themselves.
Participants who reported getting high exceptionally often—multiple times a day rather than several times a week—were not less motivated overall. In some measures, they reported slightly higher external or guilt-related motivation. However, this group also experienced more negative emotions than participants who used cannabis frequently but less often.
The clearest negative effects involved self-regulation. While high, participants described themselves as more impulsive, less orderly and less willing to follow certain rules. The effects were small, and the study did not find corresponding declines in reported responsibility, industriousness, focus or broad willingness to work.
The researchers also looked for delayed effects. After accounting for whether participants were currently high, they found no robust evidence that cannabis use earlier in the day—or on the previous day—was associated with lower motivation, effort, emotional well-being or conscientiousness. That result suggests little evidence of a next-day cannabis “hangover” within this sample; it does not establish that no cannabis user ever experiences lingering impairment or other after-effects.
The study’s design offers a more detailed view of intoxication in daily life, but its conclusions are narrower than the phrase “cannabis has no negative effects” would suggest. The participants were all frequent users, were recruited from cannabis-focused online communities and had to complete a demanding weeklong protocol. People with different patterns of use, heavier problems or less favorable experiences may have been less likely to participate or finish the study.
In addition, the researchers did not compare their participants with non-users. The results therefore cannot determine whether frequent cannabis users are generally more or less motivated than people who do not use cannabis. They show instead how the same frequent users tended to differ when they were high versus when they were not, along with differences between relatively frequent and exceptionally frequent users.
The findings also do not eliminate established concerns about cannabis. Public-health guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that cannabis can affect attention, memory, decision-making, coordination and reaction time, and that frequent use is associated with a higher risk of cannabis use disorder. Health Canada’s overview of cannabis health effects likewise warns that responses vary by factors such as THC concentration, frequency of use, age and use of other substances.
Overall, the research challenges the broad stereotype that habitual cannabis users are necessarily lazy or unmotivated. Its more measured conclusion is that, among the frequent users studied, intoxication was linked to modest changes in emotion and self-regulation—not to a general loss of motivation, increased paranoia or clear next-day emotional and motivational impairment.
