Terp Pearls in a Dab Rig: What They Do, and What They Don’t Prove

Terp pearls, also called dab beads or terp beads, are small heat-resistant spheres placed inside a dab rig’s banger. When a carb cap is used, airflow can make the pearls spin across the heated surface, moving melted cannabis concentrate around the chamber.

Their main practical purpose is to improve contact between the concentrate and the heated surface. A spinning pearl can help spread the oil across more of the banger instead of leaving it pooled in one area. That may make vaporization feel more consistent, particularly with small amounts of concentrate or a banger designed for use with pearls.

Terp pearls are sold in materials such as quartz, ceramic, silicon carbide (SiC) and synthetic ruby. The material, size and shape affect how quickly a pearl heats, how much heat it stores and how easily it moves. “Ruby” or “sapphire” products may also be colored or synthetic materials rather than natural gemstones, so buyers should check the manufacturer’s description instead of relying on the name alone.

Although users often report denser vapor or improved flavor, those effects depend on several variables, including the banger’s design, the carb cap, airflow, concentrate consistency and heating technique. There is no good evidence that terp pearls independently extract more cannabinoids or terpenes than a properly heated banger. They redistribute the concentrate and alter airflow; they do not add terpenes or make the concentrate stronger.

Research on dabbing has largely examined the chemistry of heating cannabis concentrates—not the performance of terp pearls specifically. For example, a 2017 ACS Omega study on toxicant formation during dabbing found that heating terpenes could produce compounds such as methacrolein and benzene under some conditions. A later study of aerosol components from dabbing and cannabis vaping also reported thermal degradation products and noted that added terpenes affected the resulting emissions. These experiments did not test terp pearls, so they cannot establish that pearls make dabbing safer or healthier.

That distinction matters because a smoother or more efficient draw can also make it easier to consume a large amount of THC quickly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s cannabis guidance notes that concentrates often contain highly concentrated THC and may contain additives or contaminants. High-potency products can increase the risk of intense impairment, anxiety, paranoia and cannabis use disorder. Dabbing also involves very hot surfaces and can cause burns if the rig or bead is handled before it has cooled.

Cleaning is part of maintaining a dab rig. Allow the banger and pearls to cool completely before handling them, then follow the accessory manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Remove residue regularly, inspect the pearls and banger for chips or cracks, and avoid using any bead that has visibly deteriorated. The rig itself should also be kept clean and its water changed regularly, as recommended by Health Canada’s harm-reduction guidance for dab rigs.

Terp pearls can be a useful accessory for users who want to spread concentrate around a banger and experiment with airflow. Their benefits are best understood as mechanical rather than chemical: they may improve distribution and consistency, but they do not guarantee larger clouds, better flavor or more complete extraction. Choosing a heat-rated accessory, using regulated products where available and recognizing the potency of concentrates are more important than the bead’s color or appearance.
