What the 2017 Shimadzu–Cure–CK Sciences Alliance Set Out to Learn About Cannabis Formulations

In November 2017, Shimadzu Scientific Instruments, Cure Pharmaceutical and CK Sciences announced a collaboration to investigate how cannabis compounds might be analyzed and developed for pharmaceutical use. The agreement focused on characterizing cannabinoids and terpenes, standardizing formulations and generating data that could support future clinical development. A central question was the so-called “entourage effect”—the hypothesis that combinations of cannabinoids and other cannabis constituents may produce effects that differ from those of isolated compounds. Cannabis contains numerous phytochemicals, including cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, but the therapeutic importance of particular combinations remains uncertain.

The alliance planned to use Shimadzu’s Cannabis Analyzer for Potency, a high-performance liquid chromatography system for measuring cannabinoid content, along with headspace gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for profiling volatile compounds such as terpenes. Shimadzu also said it would train laboratory personnel and provide technical support, while Cure and CK Sciences would use the resulting analyses to help evaluate cannabis-derived formulations.

The project was part of a broader research collaboration between Cure, CannaKids and the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology. Announced earlier in 2017, that partnership proposed studying how different cannabinoid profiles might affect cancer-related biological pathways and whether specific formulations could eventually be matched to particular cancer subtypes. Those aims were research plans, not evidence that a cannabis formulation had been shown to treat cancer in patients.

Subsequent reviews have reinforced the need for caution. Although laboratory and preclinical studies continue to examine possible interactions among cannabis compounds, clinical evidence has not established the entourage effect as a consistent or predictable therapeutic phenomenon. A 2024 scoping review concluded that evidence supporting its clinical efficacy, safety and regulatory use remains limited. The National Cancer Institute’s evidence summary on cannabis and cannabinoids likewise distinguishes laboratory findings and early clinical research from proven cancer treatments.

The significance of the 2017 agreement therefore lay in its proposed infrastructure for research: more precise chemical profiling, better-controlled formulations and a path toward testing cannabis-derived products under pharmaceutical standards. Whether particular combinations offer meaningful advantages over single compounds can only be determined through reproducible laboratory studies and well-designed human trials.
