Delta-8 THC May Feel Milder Than Delta-9, but Product Safety Remains Uncertain

Delta-8 THC is often marketed as “diet weed”—a gentler alternative to the delta-9 THC found in conventional cannabis. But the nickname can create a misleading sense of safety. Delta-8 is intoxicating, its effects can vary with dose and route of administration, and the products sold outside regulated cannabis systems may contain inaccurate labels or chemical by-products.

A 2022 review of delta-8 THC’s pharmacology found that delta-8 and delta-9 are closely related compounds with broadly similar effects, although delta-8 generally appears to be less potent. The difference comes from the position of a double bond in the molecules—at the eighth carbon in delta-8 and the ninth in delta-9. That small structural change affects how each compound interacts with the body’s cannabinoid receptors.

Ryan Vandrey, Ph.D., a cannabis researcher and professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has described delta-8 as roughly comparable to delta-9 in its basic effects but less potent at the receptor. Some users report a less intense or less anxiety-provoking experience, but those accounts are not a substitute for controlled clinical evidence. Research directly comparing the two compounds remains limited, and a product’s dose, formulation and method of consumption can substantially change its effects.

Most commercial delta-8 is not extracted from hemp in meaningful quantities. The cannabis plant produces only trace amounts naturally, so manufacturers generally convert hemp-derived cannabidiol, or CBD, into delta-8 through an acid-catalyzed chemical reaction. The chemistry is not new: Roger Adams and colleagues reported the isomerization of CBD to tetrahydrocannabinols in 1941. The concern today is not simply that the compound is made through a chemical process, but whether manufacturers adequately control that process and remove unwanted substances before the product reaches consumers.

That concern is supported by laboratory research. In a 2022 analysis of commercial delta-8 products, researchers found impurities in tested distillates and vape cartridges, including compounds that were not consistently disclosed on product certificates. The study examined a limited number of products, so it cannot establish that every delta-8 product is contaminated. It does, however, illustrate why certificates of analysis, labeling and manufacturing standards matter.

The Food and Drug Administration warns that delta-8 products have not been evaluated or approved for safe use. The agency has raised concerns about variable concentrations, misleading “hemp” labeling, manufacturing contaminants and products packaged in ways that may appeal to children. Between December 2020 and February 2022, the FDA received 104 adverse-event reports involving delta-8 products; reported symptoms included hallucinations, vomiting, tremor, anxiety, dizziness, confusion and loss of consciousness.

Children and pets face particular risks because gummies, chocolates and other edible products can resemble ordinary snacks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that THC amounts in edible products may be difficult to measure and may be inaccurately labeled. Edibles can also take longer to produce effects, increasing the risk that someone will consume more before the first dose has taken effect.

The legal background adds another layer of uncertainty. The 2018 Farm Bill defined hemp largely by its delta-9 THC concentration—no more than 0.3 percent by dry weight—rather than by whether a product could produce an intoxicating effect. That wording helped create a market for hemp-derived cannabinoids, including delta-8, while leaving much of the regulation to states and other agencies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s hemp regulations and guidance address hemp production, but they do not amount to a comprehensive federal safety system for every finished cannabinoid product sold in convenience stores, smoke shops or online.

Consumers should therefore treat delta-8 as an intoxicating THC product—not as a harmless form of CBD or a risk-free version of cannabis. Avoid products with unclear ingredients or exaggerated medical claims, keep them away from children and animals, and do not drive or operate machinery after using them. The central problem is not that delta-8 is automatically more dangerous than delta-9. It is that the quality, dose and contents of many products may be difficult to verify.
