Cannabidiol Shows Potential in Preclinical Studies—but Is Not an Established Treatment for Amphetamine Addiction
Amphetamine use disorder can develop after misuse of prescription stimulants or use of illicit drugs such as methamphetamine. Although medications including Adderall, Dexedrine and Vyvanse have legitimate roles in treating conditions such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, nonmedical use can lead to dependence and serious health problems.
Long-term or high-dose stimulant use may contribute to insomnia, weight loss, anxiety, cardiovascular complications and psychosis. Methamphetamine use is also associated with overdose and other medical risks. The route of administration—whether oral, intranasal, smoked or injected—can affect how quickly the drug reaches the brain and may increase harm, but addiction is a medical disorder regardless of how the substance is taken.
What the research says about CBD
Interest in cannabis-based treatments has focused primarily on cannabidiol, or CBD, rather than tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is not intoxicating in the same way as THC, but that does not mean it has been proven safe or effective for treating stimulant addiction.
A 2018 study in rats found that CBD reduced the animals’ motivation to self-administer methamphetamine and lessened methamphetamine-seeking behavior after a period of abstinence. Earlier work published in Psychopharmacology in 2004 reported that low doses of THC and CBD influenced the extinction of amphetamine-associated place preference in rats. These experiments are relevant because they examine reward and relapse-like behavior, but they do not establish that CBD or medical cannabis treats addiction in people.
A 2019 review in Molecules similarly concluded that the evidence for CBD in cocaine and methamphetamine use disorders was largely preclinical. The authors described possible effects on drug-related memories, craving, anxiety and relapse, while emphasizing the need for properly designed clinical trials. The review did not demonstrate that CBD repairs brain or liver damage caused by amphetamine use—a claim that goes beyond the available evidence.
Subsequent laboratory research has continued to explore the possibility. For example, a 2025 study reported that CBD reduced methamphetamine-related behavioral changes and mitochondrial effects in an experimental model. Such findings may help researchers identify biological mechanisms, but they remain a long way from demonstrating benefit, an appropriate dose or acceptable long-term safety in human patients.
Why THC and cannabis are not interchangeable with CBD
THC and CBD have different effects. THC is the primary intoxicating component of cannabis and can impair attention, memory and judgment; in some people, it may worsen anxiety or psychosis. Using THC to manage stimulant withdrawal or cravings could also create another substance-use problem rather than address the underlying disorder.
Unregulated CBD products present additional concerns. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that CBD can cause liver injury, interact with other medicines and vary in strength or quality. The FDA has approved a purified CBD prescription product for certain seizure disorders—not for amphetamine or methamphetamine addiction.
Established treatment remains important
There is currently no FDA-approved medication specifically for stimulant use disorder. Treatment commonly combines behavioral care, relapse-prevention support and treatment for co-occurring conditions such as depression, anxiety or psychosis. The ASAM/AAAP clinical guideline for stimulant use disorder describes evidence-based approaches, including contingency management and cognitive behavioral interventions. Research has also identified potential medication strategies, but these should be discussed with a qualified clinician rather than attempted through self-medication.
Overall, CBD is a research prospect, not a proven therapy for amphetamine addiction. Animal studies provide a rationale for further investigation, but they cannot establish effectiveness in humans, prevent relapse or reverse stimulant-related organ damage.
